Birth Injury Claims

Shoulder Dystocia and Brachial Plexus Injuries

Shoulder Dystocia is when the baby’s head has been born but one of the shoulders becomes stuck behind the mother’s pubic bone, delaying the birth of the baby’s body. When this happens, extra help is needed to release the baby’s shoulder.

In the vast majority of shoulder dystocia cases the baby will be born promptly and safely. However, 10% of babies who have shoulder dystocia will suffer from some stretching of the nerves in their neck. This is called a Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI). BPI may cause loss of movement to the shoulder, arm or hand. Erb’s Palsy is the most common form.

If your baby has suffered an injury at birth and you believe it was caused by negligent medical treatment, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation on their behalf.
