Understanding Your Rights After Pregnancy-Related Complications

Gestational diabetes and preeclampsia are serious pregnancy-related conditions that require timely diagnosis and proper medical management. If left untreated or mismanaged, these conditions can lead to severe complications for both mother and baby. While some cases arise despite best medical efforts, others occur due to failures in care. If you or your child have experienced complications due to inadequate medical care, understanding the causes, consequences, and legal options is essential.

What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, affecting how the body processes sugar (glucose). If not properly managed, it can lead to complications such as:

  • Excessive Birth Weight (Macrosomia) – Increasing the risk of birth injuries and the need for a C-section.
  • Preterm Birth – Higher likelihood of early delivery and associated complications.
  • Neonatal Hypoglycemia – Low blood sugar in the baby after birth, which can lead to seizures.
  • Increased Risk of Stillbirth – Poorly managed gestational diabetes can increase the likelihood of stillbirth.

What Is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure and damage to organs, usually the liver and kidneys. If not properly managed, it can cause severe complications such as:

  • Preterm Birth – High blood pressure can restrict the baby’s growth, leading to early delivery.
  • Eclampsia (Seizures in the Mother) – A severe form of preeclampsia that can be life-threatening.
  • Placental Abruption – The placenta can separate from the uterus prematurely, causing bleeding and oxygen deprivation for the baby.
  • Maternal & Fetal Death – If not managed properly, severe cases can be fatal.

How Gestational Diabetes & Preeclampsia Can Be Mismanaged

Medical negligence may have occurred if healthcare providers failed to appropriately diagnose, treat, or manage gestational diabetes or preeclampsia, including:

  • Failure to Screen or Diagnose – Healthcare providers failed to conduct essential blood sugar tests or blood pressure monitoring, leading to missed or late diagnoses.
  • Failure to Provide Proper Treatment – Inadequate management of the condition, including failure to prescribe appropriate medication, provide dietary guidance, or recommend insulin therapy when necessary.
  • Inadequate Fetal Monitoring – Failure to regularly monitor fetal growth, amniotic fluid levels, or placental function, increasing the risk of complications.
  • Failure to Escalate Care – Delayed specialist referrals or failure to intervene promptly, such as performing an emergency C-section when required.
  • Improper Postpartum Care – Lack of follow-up monitoring for both mother and baby, missing potential complications such as postpartum hypertension or neonatal blood sugar issues.

Consequences of Mismanaged Gestational Diabetes & Preeclampsia

Poor management of these conditions can lead to:

  • Birth Trauma & Injuries – Large birth weight can lead to shoulder dystocia or emergency interventions.
  • Maternal Health Complications – Stroke, kidney failure, or heart problems.
  • Newborn Intensive Care (NICU) Admission – Babies may require intensive medical care due to premature birth or blood sugar issues.
  • Long-Term Health Problems – Increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, or neurological impairments in both mother and baby.
